Shower Me With Jobs

in Career

By the time you’ve entered your thirties, you’ve been to your share of bridal and baby showers.  But have you ever heard of a job shower?

In December’s issue of Marie Claire, Elizabeth Roehrig age 31, details how she took her job search to the next level  with some help from her friends.  After being out of work for a full year, Elizabeth decided that she needed to be more creative in landing a job.  She created a ˜job registry”: a list of companies she was interested in working for. Next she invited friends, family members and former colleagues to check out her registry and then meet her for cocktails. In exchange for drinks on her, they had to provide leads to the companies on her registry. Was she successful?  She collected dozens of business cards and even a few leads on potential companies she hadn’t considered.

What’s the take-away?  If you’re looking for a job or contemplating a career change, reach out to your network.  It’s likely you are only one person away from landing your dream job.
